  • 13Apr05: Several panorama and other photos added. Email address changed. Minor site updates.
  • 25Apr2004: This site moved from http://www.austarmetro.com.au/~julian/ to its new location at internode.

Is Ouagadougou the capital of Burkina Faso? Is Burkina Faso actually a country? Are these serious questions? Have a look at this CIA site to find out.

If that was too easy, what about locating Tuvalu? We all know it's in the Pacific somewhere, but where? In this case the CIA map doesn't help a lot, but the website does point out that the highest point in this country is 5m above (current) sea level.

Which is why, if we don't get our act together soon, it'll be...

Toodeloo Tuvalu!

Which country's flag? The centre is a stylised yurt roof - that's a clue. And the 40 rays of the golden sun represent the 40 tribes who in tradition were united by the national hero, Manas.

If you tend towards itchy feet, don't look at this site about this interesting country. But have a look at The Times of Central Asia for a different view. The government has a national development site on which you can find the time and temperature there, or some more serious info. And here, here, and here you can find enough info on this country to keep you occupied for days.

PS - they have the world's largest natural growth walnut forest.

"The only substitute for good manners is fast reflexes." - anon

"The grand essentials of happiness are: something to do, something to love, and something to hope for." - Allan K. Chalmers (very true, and this 'inspirational quote' is all over the web, but who is Allan K Chalmers?)

"That's the problem with plutonium, Craven; it's limited in its application. It's not user-friendly. But as a vehicle for regaining one's self-respect, oh, it's got a lot going for it. Damn right I turned it into a bomb." - Darius Jedburgh in one of the top three all-time best TV series: Edge of Darkness.

"It is better to copulate than never". - Robert Heinlein

"Yield to temptation; it may not pass your way again". - RH again

"Being right too soon is socially unacceptable". - RH again

"Never attribute to malice that which can be adequately explained by stupidity" - and again. Heinlein was a very accurate thinker, which means of course that he mostly agrees with me.

And from one of the funniest and best films of all time (Life of Brian):
Brian: You are all individuals!
The Crowd: We are all individuals!
Brian: You have to be different!
The Crowd: Yes, we are all different!
Small voice: I'm not!

What's here

!!! photo gallery layout, new images, and now easier for me to update with new photos.

Despite the promises, still no reviews, cool things or essays, but don't despair there is plenty of didactic stuff about Chronic Fatigue Syndrome - comprehensive moaning about the politics of this cursed health problem and some in-depth discussion about a couple of treatments I have found useful. Lots of links and other stuff which would be of use to sufferers and those who care about/for them.

I have been confidently predicting that Transfer Factor (TF) will become as well known and used as it should be, but this has (strangely!) not eventuated. No patents for the big companies here, so no research or promotion. None-the-less, if you have a mysterious immunity problem or chronic disease, take a look at these pages and be relieved that you can buy TF easily from the US. Even better for Australians, a multi-level marketing company called 4-life has just introduced their brand of TF to Australia, so you can get it locally now. (Yes, local means Australia on this site, that's the purpose of the flag up there in the corner).

4-life distributors may care to send money for the above plug, direct to me.

Also some pages on photography, including two how-to pages:

  • How to measure the focus situation on your Nikon filmscanner (LS30, 2000, 4000, IV) and see if yours is misaligned. If you own one of these you will know that getting edge-to-edge sharp scans is a problem because the depth of focus is often insufficient to cope with curl in the film. This page will help you understand and sort out the problem.

  • How to set up your computer display for basic brightness/contrast settings. I want to tell you that it is surprising how badly many displays are set up. I was one of them till I saw the light. I have a simpler version of How to Set Up Your Display that anyone can do on my Hints For Image Viewing page.

That's about it for the moment. Plans include some reviews of films and books and a big page on good things I have found, but that may take a while because I keep getting waylaid by photos.

Please let me know about any links or other things that don't seem to work.
